Water Under Fire is an article that brings awareness to the struggles in getting clean water to those in underprivileged nations, particularly those impacted by war or civil unrest. The article discusses water being a “weapon of war,” used against innocents across the globe.

Bat Fest is an annual event held atop the Congress Avenue Bridge in Austin, Texas. The event brings out unique crowds curious about the creatures housed underneath the bridge. At dusk, over a million Mexican free-tailed bats emerge from the bridge for visitors to see.

Apex Cellars is known for limited quantity, high quality wines. They revel in their location in Washington State and their craftsmanship. The winery is known for hosting wine tastings while aboard their hot air balloons in spring and summer. This design encompasses the feeling of elevation and the sophistication of Apex Cellars.

This year I was honored to participate in the Vibe Creative District Mural Festival 2020. I was one of 10 muralists to complete murals in 10 days. This was the first mural I’ve ever done. It was tough, and but an incredible experience. The following is my chosen entry in the Vibe Creative Story Exchange.

I designed a graphic based on the beautiful writing of Valeria L Palmertree. The following is my dissertation on my design:

During this pandemic we’ve seen how desperate people can become in lieu of money.

But we’ve also seen the incredible good that people can do in spite of their financial issues. We are more than a capitalist nation. We are a collection of hardworking people who loves their neighbors, who takes care of each other. From schools donating groceries, to neighbors checking on each other from a safe distance; this quarantine has shown that our hearts are bigger, and more complex than our economic desires or issues.

The Heart of 2020 is big and strong: This is the message I’ve pushed through my work.

The heart is a found digital etching, scanned from an anatomy textbook from 1904, which has been heavily edited. It is surrounded by rays, emitting a light representing the strength and kindness of Americans even in crisis. Below it is a barcode representing the looming economic struggles placed on Americans, and those abroad. And while it seems inescapable, it is not bigger than the love and care we have shown each other during these times.

My design was always about love and care versus economic hardship, but was even more-so inspired after reading Valeria’s writing. Her perspective on how we have changed as a nation, as a world, for the better after this plight; and the hope that we stay forever changed, caring for each other, is just the message I’d also like to push, through my art.

Vibe Creative District Story Exchange 2020

Arhoolie Records has been acquired by Smithsonian/Folkways in an effort to protect the recordings, one of which is Big Mama Thornton’s “I Feel The Way I Feel.” Known for being androgynous and an overall unusual female, Thornton subverted many of the gender expectations of her time. My goal for this design was to encapsulate the harsh demeanor and exterior of Thornton with the soft heart and emotion shown within her music through photo manipulation.

Sorry Please Thank You is a set of short stories written by Charles Yu. The seemingly usual sci-fi stories have deep psychological undertones and dark messaging buried in the unique writing styles of Yu.

By depicting rising, falling and delirium, this cover is a visual representation of Yu’s literary theme. The constant overlapping and overprinting builds an image of intentional chaos, like Yu’s stories.

One of the oldest and most revered literary greats in English history is William Shakespeare. The term “the king’s English” was coined in 1958 by Shakespeare, as a definition for proper formal English. Known for classical writings and fashions, Shakespeare is the feature of this system. His collar and necktie become the book to represent the store, and the simplicity of the stationary matches his severity.

Baked and Wired is a local, family-owned coffee shop and bakery in the Georgetown county of Washington, D.C. Their shop and patrons have a strong sense of community and a bold sense of humor. With quotes on their website like “get baked,” the shop’s comical nature is prominent and unashamed. The shop’s environmental design is decorated with eclectic styles of lighting, glass and pops of color, which differentiates it from other bakeries. These elements incorporate the fun and internet culture awareness of Baked & Wired.

“The Ice Highway” is a Popular Mechanics article which documents a trip to the northernmost tip of the United States. The crew faces frozen roads, deathly temperatures, and beautiful photographic scenes which creates an exciting and visually stimulating article.

Using overlapping vector elements tied with memorable quotes and statistics from their journey, this dynamic layout is similar to the styles of futuristic military interfaces and concept vehicles. These elements support the travel documentary writing style of Austin Parkwell.

The Woods play is the modern interpretation of classic fairytale tropes in a darker, more twisted atmosphere. This southern-Gothic nightmare is English woman’s trip through post-partum depression within alternate realities. This poster plays on the two worlds the main character lives in: a mystical nightmare where she is tricked by her children, and a real nightmare where she suffers from her depression. Portrayed within is her mental and physical cage, her mind and her home.

Actually She Can is a set of trading cards celebrating brave women around the world who stood up for women’s rights and the equality of the sexes. A quote spoken by the respective women is displayed on the opposite side of the card, along with a short biography. The cards illustrate the women through graphics inspired 60s and 70s activism print styles. Elements are pulled from modern political imagery such as Shepard Fairey designs, but also the layouts and printing styles of Black Panther posters.

The Elevator Historical Society Museum, founded by retired elevator repairman Pat Carrajat, houses collectibles from around the world. The poster welcomes young potential engineers to tour the museum and experience how fun and creative mechanical engineering can be. To commemorate the founder, this poster turns into a constructable elevator toy. The elevator on the back can be built with simple household tools and rests on three separate floors.

ICDE Branding Competition | Gold Award | 2019

Royal Moving Company in Norfolk, Virginia offers cleaning, packing and moving services. They pride themselves on their efficient packing skills, speed and treating their customers with the respect and care of royalty. The branding incorporates the speed and efficiency of RMC juxtaposed with the golden royal demeanor of their services.

Memphis Minnie was a strong and ambitious artist from Walls, Mississippi. She was an untraditional, androgynous blues singer and musician with loads of talent and personality. The booklet uses vintage advertisement and wanted poster layouts mixed with western typefaces to chronicle Minnie’s experiences.

Baltimore Rising is a documentary created, directed, and produced by actor and filmmaker Sonja Sohn and HBO Films. The documentary follows the protests of Freddie Gray, an unarmed African American man who was killed mid-arrest in 2015. What followed was a set of peaceful and dangerous protests in Baltimore fighting for justice and in hopes to end police brutality in the community.

This title sequence chronicles the journey of citizens effected by the police brutality in Baltimore, Maryland through photo-based digital manipulation and animation.

Anchored Wellness is a naval based professional healthcare service in Virginia with the goal to provide the best nursing and physical therapy practices for their clients. This logo reflects their care and willingness to uphold the core foundations of medicine, while being proudly owned by strong, independent female influence.

Park 89 Realty is a local real estate agency based out of Portsmouth, Virginia. The founder wanted to push their brand forward with an elegant new logo that is modern and sophisticated. At the same time, the logo nods to the Olde Towne charm of Portsmouth, referencing the typography seen on vintage iron address signage.

Your Neighbor’s Hood Podcast is a local lifestyle podcast that focuses on race and cultural living. The podcast wanted stickers as prizes for their Fantasy Cabinet Contest. The stickers reflect their multi-cultural nature and their efforts in pushing listeners to educate themselves about history and societal progression.
